Mankind’s Symphony: Multiplication and Catastrophe
Multiply and multiply - delirium
No equilibrium desires
Use all resources then grab another place
It's in our face we're like a virus
The sixth extinction is coming nearer
With that clearer we did make a fuss
Meteorite or volcano we fear thus
Wake up - the catastrophe is us

We write Toddaid couplets this time for Merril’s Meeting the Bar (MTB) prompt on dVerse. It’s a challenging Welsh poetry form.

By the way I took some inspiration from the famous scene from the movie Matrix, where Agent Smith tells Morpheus that humans are like a virus, a disease a plague.

Agent Smith:
I’d like to share a revelation I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to another area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure.

Fitting image for the concept, and I remember that scene from The Matrix very well. It was chilling in its accuracy, especially the last line — just like the last line of your poem.
Thanks a lot!
That final line really tells it all… we are all responsible… and it is even more chilling that so large part of the population actually long for Armageddon where they will raise to be the blessed ones.
Yes, we humans are weird.
I still love them for all the good things, like poetry, art, music etc.
A worrying dystopian toddaid, Jan. You really worked those internal rhymes.
Thanks, Kim
My pleasure.
„The catastrophe is us“–so true, and probably right from the beginning. We have not been good stewards.
I wouldn’t have picked up on The Matrix, so thank you for the note–and for writing to the prompt, Jan!
Thanks for the prompt, I love the form and hope to write a less dystopian poem soon in that form.
You’re very welcome. You have to write what you’re feeling, and we do seem to be living in a scary time–but I am hoping you can feel something cheerful, too. 😊
Yes, indeed, I’m a rather cheerful person. Maybe those poems and some gloomy thoughts are the counterbalance everyone needs. I can’t be happy and enthusiastic all the time and all day. 😉
I totally understand. I’m the same way. 🙂
❤️
Agree, the Earth can do better without humans!
Vandana Sharma
Thank you, Vandana. That’s an interesting question:
What would the world look like? And who would give their opinion if something is good or bad (and hence better)?
Probably everything would just ‚be‘.
A great poem … the art equally great!!!!
Thanks, Helen
That last line is powerful. Great writing!
Thank you
What a delight to read, Jan, though it strikes a somber note, but we need the reminder.
Thank you, Dora
I love the Agent Smith quote (was he wrong?) No holding back in this one, powerful.
I love Matrix as a whole, it’s a master piece, but that scene in particular gave me the creeps.
Yes, I can agree, Hugo Weaving played it so well too.
I enjoyed this and that last line! I had forgotten the movie but your footnote brought back that scene. But we do have some good qualities, isn’t it!
Yes, absolutely.
I’m also more an optimist and hope we’ll survive somehow.
The arts, music, sports, literature.
Humans are incredible! 😀
Couldn’t agree more. 😀
